14 January 2021 – Economy Class is a one-day symposium curated by Richard Hall, who invited me to contribute with a lecture called: ‘Housing as a Systemic Design Task’. I will be talking about the Knikker and Kloosterbuuren projects.
Architecture is an economic matter. A conscious economy of means is as essential to shaping a work of architecture as it is to the discipline’s ability to productively operate within, and contribute to, reality more broadly. This symposium is concerned with the various economies at play around and within architecture: those architects are subject to and those architects subject their work to.
Taking the ‘more, cheaper, faster’ doctrine as a cultural backdrop, the capacity for architecture to critically and responsibly translate constraints into pleasures will be examined.
Economy Class, Thursday 21 January from 10:00 – 17:00 GMT. Please register here.
