In the context of the professorship of Jan Peter Wingender at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture, HvdH was a member of the Material & Design research group. This research group look at the contemporary use of brickwork. Today, bricks are mainly used as a cladding, a brick dress around the main structure of the building. The members of the research group prepared essays and discussed them with one another. The results were collected in the book Brick, an Exacting Material which Jan Peter Wingender produced.

HvdH’s contribution was the essay On the Eye and the Mind. Four diagrams illustrating the text have been prepared for the book.
