16 April 2026 – As part of her research programme A Home between East and West, Ceylan Kiliç is studying the Ottoman house. This is the predominant housing type in towns such as Safranbolu in northern Turkey. The dwellings are characterised by self-contained living, sleeping and cooking rooms with en-suite bathrooms, arranged around spacious communal halls. Historically, these are houses in which several generations of a family live together in various configurations. Ceylan is investigating the suitability of this type of dwelling for current housing needs in the Netherlands.
Ceylan organised a workshop at Karabük University. Hans helped supervise the students, gave a lecture at the university and a public lecture in Safranbolu, where he received a thoughtful souvenir from the governor.
