Hoffmann

21 January 2019 – Today, the model has been collected for the exhibition ‘Alternative History’, which is being prepared by Jantje Engels and Marius Grootveld (Veldwerk Architecten, Belgium) in collaboration with Ellis Woodman (Architecture Foundation, UK) and Niall Hobhouse (Drawing Matter, UK).

They have approached a group of contemporary practices whose work embodies an understanding of architecture as a corpus of inherited idea. In the exhibition these architects imagine a collaboration with ones from the past. They each took a historic drawing as the point of departure of a design elaboration which will be presented in a physical model.

I was asked to work at a tiny sketch for a cottage by the Viennese architect Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956). I did not know much of  him. I found the sketch at the same time intriguing and awkward. Probably because the cottage has an expressive roof, an attractive theme to me, Jantje and Marius asked me for this design. Hoffmann’s small house has a veranda with exaggeratedly thick columns. In the model the constituting parts of the architecture are articulated further. Basement, steps, columns, façade, gutter, roof and chimney are reduced to a composition which is based on the simple stacking of its parts. In order to stress the idea of stacking, the model has been built in sheets of MDF. The model is as small as the original sketch.

I am eager to see the results of the other architects. More news on the exhibition to follow shortly.
