10 August 2016 – The website of the magazine De Architect opens with a picture that I took of one of the most beautiful buildings I know, the Sant’Angelo monastery in Milan. This was completed in 1939 to the design of the Novecento architect Giovanni Muzio. It is a timeless building. Every time I am there I am struck by its urban properties. The picture has been taken from one of the monks’ cells. The arches of the brick street façade filter the light and introduce distance to the city of Milan. The monastery offers seclusion from Milan, but the city remains the driving force in the way this is achieved.
