15 August 2022 – What is sustainable? Saturday, the Dutch newspaper NRC published my article Sustainable Architecture Stuck in Rhetoric about the consequences of the architectural rhetoric that is currently playing up under the banner of Sustainability.

The heart beats left. And it is not for nothing that my architects studio is called: Hans van der Heijden, het bureau voor duurzaam stadsontwerp bv. But I do not believe that we are doing sustainability a service with Tech, rhetoric and good intentions. Instead, we soberly orientate ourselves on the principles of the European city and the historical study of the renewal of its buildings. It has knowledge in store that our clients may need today.
